Happy Birthday

The city offers on a daily base thousands of random frequencies that remind me of

the civil defense siren. The moments when my ears are looking for the source create

additional coding and refinements to what is considered to be a civil defense siren.

I cut the civil defense siren into three parts (the rise/the middle/the fall) and examined

how the sound is traveling in the emergency stairwell and how my memory can be

embedded in this fragmented experience.

This performance was made as part of a class assignment and there was no option to

take proper video documentation. Attached is the sound file of the expderince.

The Script:

Participants in the show reached the 8th floor emergency stairwell. When they entered

the stairwell the sound started:

Speaker 1 hidden in the stairwell: Narrator

Demanding attention

Luring to obey

The fine line between sanity and insanity

If you hear a siren - walk down to the 7th floor

(5 speakers on the 4th floor)

speaker 2: 10 seconds: Beat

speaker 1, 3, 4, 5, 6: 30 seconds: the rise

speaker 2: 10 seconds: Beat

5 seconds: silence

speaker 2: 10 seconds: Beat

(I am standing in the 4th floor)

Screaming:

Demanding attention

Luring to obey

The fine line between sanity and insanity

If you hear a siren - hold your hands to the side of your body, bow your head and close

your eyes

s

peaker 1, 3, 4, 5, 6: 30 seconds: the middle

speaker 2: 10 seconds: Beat

5 seconds: silence

speaker 2: 10 seconds: Beat

(while walking up to the 6th floor)

Saying:

Demanding attention

Luring to obey

The fine line between sanity and insanity

If you hear a siren - look at me

speaker 1, 3, 4, 5, 6: 30 seconds: the fall

speaker 2: 10 seconds: Beat

5 seconds: silence

speaker 2: 10 seconds: Beat

(An actor is walking down from the 8th floor holding a birthday cake)

Hayom yom huledet

Today is the birthday

Hayom yom huledet

Today is the birthday

Hayom yom huledet le'Dana

Today is the birthday of Dana

speaker 2: 10 seconds: Beat

(I say to the actor)

Demanding attention

Luring to obey

The fine line between sanity and insanity

Every time i heard a siren, all I wanted was for someone to open the door for me and

say: "It's all over - we're back to normal."

speaker 2: 10 seconds: Beat

The door of the 6th floor is opened, an actor is saying:

"It's all over - we're back to normal."

(Me and the first actor are standing still and not moving after participants left the

stairwell).
